Semax and Selank

Semax and Selank are two heptapeptides developed in Russia, stabilized by a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence. Semax, derived from ACTH, is studied in neuroprotection and cognition. Selank, an analogue of tuftsin, is being studied on the stress response.

MOTS-c

MOTS-c is a 16 amino acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It is studied, mainly in animal models, for its role in energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

Why are these peptides gathered here?

These molecules belong neither to the incretin family, nor to that of regeneration peptides, nor to the growth hormone axis. They are brought together by default, but each corresponds to a well-identified field of research: cognition for Semax, the response to stress for Selank, cellular energy metabolism for MOTS-c.

Their common point is rather due to their origin: they are short peptides, derived from natural sequences - an ACTH fragment for Semax, an analogue of tuftsin for Selank, a peptide coded by mitochondrial DNA for MOTS-c. This connection with endogenous molecules is precisely what interests researchers.

The status of available data

Semax and Selank were developed in Russia, where they are registered as medicines. The literature concerning them is therefore mainly Russian-speaking, and few essays meet Western methodological standards. MOTS-c, discovered in 2015, is even more recent: the data comes almost exclusively from animal and cellular models.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Semax and the Selank?

Semax derives from ACTH and is studied in cognition; Selank derives from tuftsin and is studied on stress.

Where does MOTS-c come from?

It is encoded by mitochondrial DNA, in the 12S ribosomal RNA gene, which makes it an original peptide among research peptides.
